VEGASinsight:
Your bachelor pad is not as hot as Java’s — or his party
If there seems to be a mysterious increase in the
number of hot rods, beehives and pomade use next weekend in Las Vegas,
that must mean it’s time for yet another edition of Viva Las Vegas, the
big rockabilly weekender that essentially takes over the Gold Coast Hotel
and Casino from April 10 to 13. It’s year 11 for this annual fete, which
features a car show, burlesque competition, art show and dozens of rockabilly,
R&B and roots rock bands from across the globe performing live at the
property’s showrooms and lounges.
As with any convention, sometimes the peripheral events
are just as – if not more – interesting as the main show. Such is the case
with the second Cocktails & Cheesecake Party being thrown by Java’s
Bachelor Pad at the newly-whitewashed Art Bar (1511 S. Main St.). Happening
on Friday, April 11 at 7 p.m., the Cocktails & Cheesecake Party will
feature burlesque performers including Kalani Kokonuts, Ava Garter, Betsey
Bosen, Bunny Bravo and Ravenna Black, music spun by DJ GooGoo Muck, and
all sorts of other swinging action.
Cover for the event is only $5 and hosts include Gigi
Valiant, Kay O’Hara and Java himself. If you miss this, you are one cat
with low hep quotient. Check out the 2006 event photos and more by clicking

Las
Vegas Weekly:
Actual cheesecake not included
Just in time for the annual Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly
Weekend (April 10-13 at the Gold Coast), the second Cocktails & Cheesecake
party will take place on April 11 at the Art Bar in conjunction with the
Vegas launch of Bachelor Pad Magazine. Celebrating all things relevant
to the culture of the atomic age, the event will be hosted by Java, the
man behind the “Bachelor Pad Empire,” the mag’s first centerfold, and current
and past winners of the coveted Bachelor Pad website “Cheesecake Queen”
title (note: not a reference to a down-home, small-town baking contest
winner).
The night will be filled with music by Goo Goo Muck,
burlesque performances and autograph and photo opportunities with some
of the ladies that grace the mag’s retro-themed pages. Scheduled to perform
are Betsey Bosen, Siren of the South Veronica Lashe, Bunny Bravo, Nymphette
of Burlesque Lolita Haze, Kalani Kokonuts, Ravenna Black (recently featured
on ABC’s Wife Swap) and a grand finale by Bachelor Pad pin-up Ava Garter.
Doors open at 7 p.m., the cover is only $5, and bowling shirts and garter
belts are encouraged, though preferably not together. |

10/17/07--Another review is in!
This time from the blog Life
on Lavender Hill:
| Bachelor Pad Magazine, a review
The ever-gracious host, Java (Jason Croft), was kind
enough to send me a *free* copy of the premiere issue of his Bachelor Pad
Magazine, and I promised to post up a review, so here you go:
It's a natural, next-progression of the well-known
web site, Java's Bachelor Pad, popular among the modern loungers. Full
of eye-candy, cheesecake and full-color photography, it's enough to give
you a toothache! While I find it's 5x7 (editor's note: the magazine
is actually 5.5" x 8") size aesthetically pleasing, and the color bright
and bold, the articles in the first issue are a little lean. There are
quite a few of them, and most look to be regular column-types, so I'm optimistic
for future issues.
Overall, if you're into this sort of thing, it's not
to be missed. So, now that the Holidays are in clear range, I recommend
that you get yourself over to the web site and order up a Gift Sub for
your favorite Cad, Lounge Lizard, Gigolo or whichever person in YOUR life
most likely to dig a magazine full of pin up girls in Technicolor!
***ETA: I've just had confirmation from Java himself
the next issue will be chock-full of writing! Not that anyone will notice,
with all the gorgeous girls, but some of us are still geeks for the written
word!***

10/5/07--People love Bachelor
Pad Magazine!
Here's
a review from Bookgasm:
Bachelor Pad Magazine #1
Author: Bruce Grossman
bachelor pad 1 reviewThe debut issue of the digest-sized
Bachelor Pad Magazine promises three things: booze, babes and burly-q.
It fulfills all those promises real quick.
Picking up from what was started in the sadly defunct
Kutie magazine, this is a throwback to the men’s periodicals of yore –
the type that are now sold for ridiculous prices, offering nothing but
promises and very little follow-through. But Bachelor Pad knows who its
audience is right away: guys who wish that Vegas were still Vegas from
the good ol’ days of the Rat Pack.
If you’re looking for nudity, you’re grabbing the wrong
magazine. This is all about the tease, with cheesecake models with a retro
vibe and a ton of cheesecake, featuring a dead-on ringer for Bettie Page
by the name of Berni Dexter. You also have Kay O’Hara, their debut centerfold
who’s a drop-dead blonde bombshell. Finishing it up are little costume
shots of Betty Bosen as a maid we would all love to employ.
If this were the only thing going for the magazine,
you wouldn’t feel gypped, since for the small cover price of $4, you get
more then your money’s worth. But there are plenty of little articles peppered
throughout, with some very funny party tips from Penny Starr, who explains
the rights and wrongs of throwing a proper function.
They also have an Ann Landers type for the retro-loving
crowd and a nice little piece about the types of men who are part of burlesque
dancers’ lives. It’s funny and probably totally on target. There is, of
course the film column that tells you the films that portray the cool side
of Vegas. (Sadly, VEGAS VACATION did not make the cut.)
Also included is a advice column for budding models
by their cover girl Heidi Van Horne, with some accompanying photos that
will make you wish that she were your neighbor. The magazine is just a
fun little read, not taking itself too seriously and not making you feel
like some pervert flipping through it.
So for those who have outgrown the Maxim/FHM thing
and feel Playboy is way too snooty and out-of-touch, then Bachelor Pad
is the cure for your cheesecake needs. I can’t wait for issue two. It comes
out quarterly with a price of $16 – not a bad deal at all, since you probably
would have wasted that money on a CD you would grow tired of. –Bruce Grossman |
